Rincón de la Vieja National Park: Las Pailas trail

? Overview
? Embark on a lush, hands-on chocolate adventure just outside Jaco. Walk through a tropical transitional forest to reach a private cocoa plantation, where you’ll discover the journey of cacao — from fruit on the tree to delicious chocolate in your hands. This immersive experience brings together nature, history, and the sweet art of chocolate making.
Begin your journey with a guided walk through a beautiful transitional forest, where the guide introduces you to the ecosystem and the cacao trees that flourish here. As you arrive at the cocoa plantation, you’ll discover the first international cocoa collection in the region and hear the ancestral stories of cacao — how it shaped local culture and economies.
During the tour, you’ll taste the raw, juicy pulp of the cocoa fruit, experiencing a flavor very different from processed chocolate. You’ll then get hands-on: shelling dried beans, grinding them, and turning them into chocolate using traditional tools. After crafting, it’s time to taste: sip hot chocolate made in an old-school way, sample dark and milk chocolate, and even dip tropical fruits into chocolate for a sweet, fruity twist. Along the way, your guide also introduces you to sugar cane and coffee plants, explaining their role in Costa Rica’s agricultural heritage.
